The Sims 3 is no longer available as a retail product. However, it is still available to purchase as an Origin or EA Access purchase, both of which include the all of the content that was previously a part of the retail product, and provide lifetime activation and access to future content.
As such, you do not need to purchase an old retail version of the game. All of the content is freely available through EA Access or Origin as long as you are subscribed to their services.
